OVERVIEW OF WORLD INDICES AND THEIR ROLE IN THE MARKET TRENDS FORMATION
Abstract
The article provides a review of the world’s leading stock indices and their role in shaping modern market trends. It examines the S&P 500, Dow Jones Industrial Average, NASDAQ Composite, and FTSE 100 as indicators reflecting not only national economies but also global financial processes. The composition of indices, their calculation methods, representativeness, and the influence of individual companies are analyzed. Special attention is paid to their diagnostic role in monitoring current market conditions and their prognostic role in forecasting changes in the investment environment. Stock indices are shown to be not only statistical measures but also essential tools for investors, analysts, and governments. They shape market sentiment, influence financial decision-making, support risk management strategies, and underpin derivative instruments and trading approaches. Their movements reflect both domestic and external drivers, including monetary policy, macroeconomic indicators, innovation in technology, and international trade relations. The study highlights that the S&P 500 is the most representative indicator of the U.S. economy and a global financial barometer. The Dow Jones Industrial Average, with its focus on a limited number of large corporations, is viewed as a measure of stability for “blue chips.” The NASDAQ Composite captures the dynamics of high-tech companies, sensitive to innovation and volatility. The FTSE 100 reflects the British market but has a pronounced global scope due to the international operations of its largest firms. It is concluded that the comprehensive analysis of global stock indices helps identify patterns in market processes and design effective strategies for both investors and policymakers. Under conditions of rising global interdependence, the study of these indicators becomes a crucial tool for predicting capital flows, managing risks, and ensuring the resilience of national economies.
